Why Starting Puppy Training Early Matters

The early stages of puppyhood are some of the most important months of your dog’s life. Puppies are constantly learning about the world around them, which makes this the perfect time to begin basic obedience and life skills training.

Many people wait until their puppy is older to start training, but the truth is that training begins the moment your puppy comes home. Every interaction teaches them something — either behaviors you want or behaviors you may later struggle to change.

Starting training early helps puppies learn important skills like:

• Name recognition

• Sit, down, and recall

• Leash manners

• Crate training

• Impulse control

• Appropriate play behavior

• Calmness around distractions

Early training also helps prevent common problem behaviors from becoming habits. Jumping, biting, barking, pulling on leash, and stealing objects are much easier to address before they become deeply ingrained behaviors.

Puppy training is also critical for building confidence. Safe exposure to new environments, sounds, surfaces, people, and experiences teaches puppies that the world is a safe place. Confident puppies are less likely to develop fear-based behaviors later in life.
