Why Natural Dog Behaviors Are Important

Dogs are born with instincts. Behaviors like digging, barking, chasing, shredding, sniffing, and chewing are all natural canine activities. Instead of simply punishing these behaviors, it’s important to understand why dogs perform them and provide healthy outlets.
Many unwanted behaviors happen because dogs are attempting to meet instinctual needs in inappropriate ways.
For example:
Dogs dig to explore, cool down, or release energy
Dogs bark to communicate
Dogs chase because of prey drive
Dogs shred because chewing and tearing are naturally rewarding
Dogs sniff because scent exploration is mentally fulfilling
When these needs are ignored completely, frustration often increases.
Rather than trying to eliminate instinctual behaviors entirely, training should focus on teaching appropriate ways to express them.
Healthy outlets may include:
Dig boxes
Snuffle mats
Flirt poles
Tug games
Chew items
Scent work
Structured play sessions
Meeting instinctual needs can reduce behavioral issues while improving emotional well-being.
Dogs were not designed to suppress every natural behavior all day long. They thrive when they are given opportunities to engage in safe, structured, species-appropriate activities.
At Granite State K9 Training, we help owners understand their dog’s natural drives and channel them into productive behaviors.
