Why Rest and Settle Time Matter in Dog Training

One of the most overlooked parts of dog training is teaching dogs how to relax.
Many owners focus heavily on exercise and activity but forget that dogs also need to learn how to settle calmly and regulate themselves. Dogs who are constantly overstimulated can become restless, mouthy, impulsive, and unable to relax at home.
Rest is especially important for puppies. Just like overtired toddlers, overtired puppies often become wild, nippy, and unable to focus.
Teaching calmness is a skill. Dogs don’t always naturally know how to settle themselves in busy households or stimulating environments.
Helpful settle-training strategies include:
Rewarding calm behavior
Using place or mat training
Providing quiet downtime
Creating consistent routines
Using calming enrichment activities
Avoiding constant stimulation throughout the day
Rest also supports learning. Dogs process information and experiences during downtime. Without adequate rest, dogs can become mentally overwhelmed and struggle to retain training.
Balance is key. Dogs need opportunities to move, play, and explore — but they also need structure, predictability, and calm periods to recharge.
At Granite State K9 Training, we help owners teach dogs not only how to be active companions, but also how to relax peacefully at home.
